JLM FEATURED COMMUNITY PLACEMENTS

Aid to Inmate Mothers

By LaTricia Jones , Aid to Inmate Mothers committee chair

This year ladies of Junior League of Montgomery volunteered with the nonprofit Aid to Inmate Mothers ( AIM ) that helps women who are incarcerated at Julia Tutwiler Prison . League members went to AIM to pack hygiene bags which contained shampoo , conditioner , toothpaste , toothbrushes , deodorant , and white socks . We also prepared care packages for the children of these incarcerated mothers . League members did their own shopping for the kids and provided stuffed animals , candy , small puzzles , word games , cars , and hair clips . We also included gift cards for the older teens . During Christmastime , the league members packed and delivered 650 bags of candy and Christmas cards to the inmates at Tutwiler prison . Kimberlin Love purchased new comforters , curtains , throw rugs , shower curtains , and bathroom accessories to do a room makeover for the residents who live in the AIM house . Emily Short baked and delivered 2-3 dozen cookies for the residents at the AIM house . LaTricia Jones packed 250 candy bags for the inmates at the Montgomery Women ’ s Annex at Tutwiler for Valentine ’ s and Mother ’ s Day .

Although we were not able to go inside Julia Tutwiler Prison , our committee enjoyed the experience of giving back and helping the ladies . I would volunteer with this placement again . Thank you to Carol Potok and her staff at Aid to Inmate Mothers .
