SUCCESSFUL GARDENER

Create a Summer Container Garden
Container gardens allow you to plant vegetables,
herbs, flowers or small shrubs that accommodate
your lifestyle and space. • Select a container large enough to support the
root system of what you’re planting.
Container gardens provide a variety of benefits. First,
they’re a great way to add vibrant color to a dull,
drab area. They also allow you to grow your favorite
plants, even if you don’t have space for a traditional
garden. Container gardens are also mobile—it’s much
easier to move the container than having to fully dig
up plants to transport them. • Use plastic or clay pots. Keep in mind that
plastic pots tend to dry out quicker and need
more frequent watering.
• Use clean and new potting soil. Reusing soil
can lead to disease.
• Place your containers where they are easily
accessible to water. n
Good selections for a container garden include:
Flowers: Begonia, petunias, verbena, pentas
Trailing plants: Sweet potato vine, creeping
Jenny, lobelia, Bacopa
Herbs: Mint, basil, rosemary, thyme
Here are some tips for achieving success with a
container garden:
• Choose a container with multiple holes in the
bottom; good drainage is key to prevent disease.
