CABARRUS COUNTY VETERANS SERVICE OFFICE Expect more. T The Cabarrus County Veterans Service Office is a valuable resource for local veterans and their families. The four-member Veterans Service team is comprised of accredited Veterans Service Officers who assist with the navigation of U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs programs. They provide help with securing benefits, including compensation, veterans pension, survivors pension, appeals, veteran health care, survivor benefits, education and home loan guaranty. Veterans Service has been with the County for decades, yet many veterans are surprised to learn there is a local and free resource. “One of our biggest challenges is raising awareness of our services,” said Tim Tereska, Director of Cabarrus Veterans Service Office and Air Force veteran. “Vets tell us stories of spending months or years searching for answers on their own, not realizing our office can help. A lot of our clients are referred to us from veterans we’ve helped in the past. We are accessible and our staff is one of the best you’ll find. We can help find answers to difficult questions and circumstances.” In the last year, Cabarrus County Veterans Service Office helped process close to 700 claims that brought in almost $5 million to local veterans and their families. The number of people they serve each year continues to climb, but they are a small percentage of those who qualify for the services. “We’re not just about the paperwork; we’re about serving an important role in the community,” Tereska said. Each year, the office hosts events that bring veterans together, including a Veterans Day program at the Boys and Girls Club and their signature event— a free veterans breakfast each December. “We want our local veterans to feel valued,” Tereska said. “So stop by, say hello, and learn about what we can do for you.” n To learn more, call 704-920-2869 or visit www.cabarruscounty.us/vets.
