FIGHTING FOR THE
DREAM OF EDUCATION:
The Power of Your Donations in the Face of Declining Giving

U.S. CHARITABLE GIVING
TO INTERNATIONAL
NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS*
W
e are grateful for every single
donor and each individual sup-
porter. Without the generosity
of our CAI family, we could not fulfill our
mission to change the world through the
education of girls. From advocates to finan-
cial donors, we depend on you to ensure the
most wide-reaching impacts for our benefi-
ciaries and in-country partners. And every
dollar matters in helping these communities
maintain their resolve.
For the past 22 years, we have seen firsthand
remarkable success stories of young girls
and women. When given a chance to further
their education, they are unstoppable. CAI
depends on your continued support to ensure
the viability of our organization and the best
possible outcomes for our beneficiaries.

HOW THE TAX ACT AFFECTS
CHARITABLE GIVING TRENDS
In 2017, giving to international affairs
organizations declined by 7.4 percent —
this in spite of numerous natural disasters 1 .
Total charitable giving in the U.S. grew by
5.2 percent, mostly thanks to a booming
stock market and thriving economy 2 . Yet
giving in the first quarter of 2018 dropped
2.4 percent, a substantial hit for nonprofits,
including CAI.
The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA),
one of the most significant U.S. tax legisla-
tion updates since the Tax Reform of 1986,
affects individuals, businesses, and charita-
ble organizations like CAI. Its most signif-
icant impacts for our organization are tied
to a doubling of the standard deduction
