Glacial melt and heavy rains in August 2010 in Talis Valley, Pakistan caused severe flooding, mudslides, and landslides. The flooding destroyed around 150 homes, killed 13 people and injured dozens more. There was also significant damage of roads, bridges, dykes, and a loss of trees, crops, and livestock, right before harvest time. Talis Valley is home to about 5,000 people living in 500 homes. A year later, on July 31, 2011, another flood killed at least one person and destroyed another 130 homes in the valley. CAI provided 160 tents, blankets, and temporary school facilities after the 2010 flood. (Pictured on page 10 and 11) MUDFLOWS: A mudflow swept down the mountainside in the summer of 2015. The flow was so massive that it diverted the Gunt river, submerging most of Barsem village. Dishes, linens, furniture, and other household goods were caught up in the rush of water and sent floating downstream. Luckily, the incident happened in the afternoon and most residents were out of their houses and able to make it to safety. The government helped with recovery efforts, including the construction of a new school building. In 2019, CAI Tajikistan plans to repair a school a few kilometers from Barsem in a neighboring valley. l Children play at the base of an avalanche just outside of Khorog, Tajikistan in 2016.
