Total wheat production in 2017 is forecast at 4.28 million tons, almost 16 percent below the five-year average. Children are often responsible for collecting water and sometimes walk great distances to fill their containers. Hundreds of varieties of melon thrive in Central Asia due to the region’s hot, dry summer climate. The fruit is celebrated with special holidays; consumed for medicinal purposes; cooked, dried and even stored in special melon houses.
