p Just four days before this picture was taken, Marzia could neither read nor write. However, after four days of instruction at a CAI-supported literacy program in Laghman, Afghanistan, she is proud to say she can now count to ten and write her name. The words scrawled on the chalkboard are the first words she had ever written in English. These accomplishments are the first steps on the long road to literacy, but Marzia is not daunted. In fact, these achievements have inspired her. She tells us she wants to be a doctor and it is her hope that someday she’ ll be able to serve women who otherwise might not have access to medical care. Read more of Marzia’ s story on page 14.
