After one fourth-grade boy heard the story, he promised to give Greg the entire contents of his piggybank and an idea was born. The entire school joined the effort and raised 62,340 pennies.
That first fundraising effort contained the fundamental principals of the Pennies for Peace program: kids helping kids; anyone can be a philanthropist; and it doesn’ t take much to make a tangible difference in someone else’ s life half a world away.
In Denver, a school librarian stopped to tell us her P4P story. She told her students that if they could raise $ 500 or more to help support education, especially for girls, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan, she would shave her head.
Well, those kids took her on her word. With enthusiasm and determination, they exceeded the $ 500 goal. And, yes, she shaved her head.
This librarian said that even though her students may have been partially motivated by the possibility of embarrassing her, it was inspiring to watch them rally behind such a selfless cause.
These stories are the essence of Pennies for Peace.
Over the years, CAI has worked with various partners to develop a K-12 curriculum for teachers, librarians, homeschoolers, and anyone else who signs up to do a P4P campaign. The curriculum, along with the“ toolkit,” includes a wide range of ideas on how to make a campaign successful and fun. The toolkit is free and is available online or on DVDs that we will mail to anyone who requests a copy.

Dear Pennies for Peace,
June 2, 2014
Dear Pennies for Peace,
We are five fourth-graders in Mrs. Gauthier’ s class at Red Smith School in Green Bay, Wisc. In our guided reading group we read Three Cups of Tea. We have realized how VERY fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads and wonderful teachers! We decided we want to help. We had a collection with K-5-graders in our school. Please accept our donation and use it to help build schools for those in need. We would love to hear back from you!
Thank you for all you do to help out those in need!
Sincerely, Miyah, Faith, Virginia, Rachel, Abby, Mrs. Gauthier
