COSAM Alumnus Receives H. Moren Fuller Award Jordan Named 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award Winner Upshaw Awarded South Carolina’s Order of the Palmetto Dr. Calvin McCulloh has received the 2015 H. Moren Fuller Award, given by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s (UAB) School of Dentistry Alumni Association. McCulloh was presented the award during the Alabama Dental Association’s annual meeting in Orange Beach, Alabama. McCulloh attended Auburn University for three years and went on to UAB’s School of Dentistry without receiving his pre-dental degree. In 2008, Stewart Schneller, former dean of COSAM, determined that McCulloh had completed appropriate coursework to be awarded his pre-dental degree from Auburn. After approval by the Auburn University provost, president, and board of trustees, a private graduation ceremony was held at the McCullohs’ home where he was presented with his degree. Ralph Jordan Jr., ’70, ’75, received the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award, an annual award given by COSAM to outstanding alumni who have achieved significant stature in their chosen field, and who show a commitment to the university. Jane Upshaw, mathematics ’69, was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s, highest civilian honor for recognition of extraordinary work and dedication to the citizens of South Carolina. Upshaw was selected to receive the Order of the Palmetto by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and the award was presented to Upshaw by University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides, Board of Trustees member Paula Harper Bethea, and members of the South Carolina delegation. She served as chancellor of the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) for 15 years where she led the transition from a two-year campus to a fouryear university, opened a new Hilton Head Gateway campus in Bluffton, South Carolina, and founded Sand Shark athletics, launching nine intercollegiate athletic programs. McCulloh graduated from dental school in 1956 and, after completing two years of military service with the U.S. Air Force, opened a practice in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, in 1958 where he remained until 2000. He then taught at the UAB School of Dentistry until his retirement in 2010. Among many awards and honors, he was the first recipient of the Birmingham Dentist of the Year Award and was the first dentist to serve as Southeast regent for the American College of Dentists from 2002 to 2006. He was also president of the Alabama Dental Association and the Birmingham District Dental Society. The H.
