many HR professionals is no longer in getting there, but in
demonstrating value so as to be invited to stay. Whether
one refers to the new HR as Human Capital Management,
Talent Management or Strategic HR, the implications are
the same. HR has to transform – literally – in order to
live up to what is now expected of it. Essentially, it must
move from a passive to active player; it must embrace
the science of people management (in addition to the art);
and it must become a
strategic partner to line
managers throughout the
