The major issue that many (including myself) face in embarking on CPD is undoubtedly time. Similar to most other professional development activities, such as workshop attendance or skill development, engaging with a CPD recognition scheme is a process that requires support in-house to allow both sufficient provision of opportunity and sufficient protection of time to engage. What this equates to is writing, drafting, thinking and discussion time which must fit around all the other pressures of life in HE. Having now run our in-house CPD route for a short period, I would reflect that protection of dedicated CPD time for the individual is the single biggest determinant of “successful” engagement with professional recognition which, rather than meaning failure to achieve that recognition, lack of time means the myriad benefits of the process are blunted, doing no credit to the person’s professional identity or their development longer term. Interestingly, over my years as a member of recruitment panels for teachers from every school within the University, HEA recognition status has been a key factor in both the shortlisting process as well as interview discussion topics. because the journey is all we have. On that note, I`ll leave you with a final obscure quote and wish you well for the coming semester. “Sometimes it`s necessary to do unnecessary things” Kanade Jinguuji - Dr. Russell Crawford Managing Editor of JADE In short, I have yet to think of a good reason not to engage with the CPD route and lack of time cannot and must not be an excuse. The antidote for this has to be supportive discussions in-house and as always, the earlier the better with these. Bringing this discussion back to JADE (as always), what we have in the pages of this edition and indeed every edition to date, are colleagues “evidencing” their own CPD…..take a second to digest that….. each article, highlight or letter is someone else’s professional development activity and whether they think to use them or not, the fact remains that we are always engaging in professional development… it`s just a matter of whether we are gaining the most from it. With all this in mind, please continue to consider submitting to JADE for your own dissemination and CPD activities as well as thinking a little deeper about your own CPD and where you will go next, E d i t o r ' s E p i l o g ue 67
