CHAPTER 4
LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Global Education Programme Trip to Chiang Mai
The Chiang Mai Global Education Programme ( GEP ) 2024 was an enriching journey , immersing students in the vibrant culture , breathtaking nature , and rich traditions of Chiang Mai while making a meaningful impact through community service . This experience combined exploration , learning , and service , fostering personal growth and global citizenship .
One of the most rewarding aspects of the trip was the community service project , where students collaborated to build mud - brick houses for a rural village – Earth Home in Moo Baan Maejo ( Maejo Village ). This collective effort was far more than a construction task but a testament to the power of teamwork and the impact of sustainable practices . The students took on every stage of the building process , from mixing mud and forming bricks to laying them in place and plastering the walls . This hands-on activity not only equipped them with practical skills but also reinforced the importance of working together toward a common goal . Beyond the technical aspects , the project underscored a vital purpose of providing a temporary roof for those in need while promoting eco-friendly , pollution-free construction methods that align with sustainable living principles . It was a humbling and deeply fulfilling experience , as students saw how their united efforts could serve a broader community and benefit nature too .
At the Chang Chill Elephant Sanctuary , students observed elephants in their natural habitat , respecting their routines and learning about ethical tourism . They also gained insight into the historical importance of elephants in Thailand ’ s culture and heritage . The visit deepened their understanding of wildlife conservation and instilled a greater respect for nature .
The group explored the Bua Thong limestone waterfall , climbing its unique natural steps and enjoying the lush surroundings . At the Doi Suthep Temple , with over 700 years of history , they admired its golden architecture and panoramic views of Chiang Mai while learning about its cultural and spiritual significance to Buddhists across Thailand .
Evenings at the Anusarn Night Market were lively and engaging , as students sampled local dishes , shopped for handicrafts , and connected with locals , experiencing Chiang Mai ’ s vibrant daily life . Cultural activities like crafting and releasing Krathongs , symbolising gratitude and renewal , and learning to cook Pad Thai , blending creativity with flavour , added depth to the program .
The Chiang Mai GEP 2024 was a journey of growth , connection , and service . Students returned with unforgettable memories , stronger friendships , and a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures , along with an awareness of their ability to make a meaningful impact . This program truly embodied the spirit of global education and community engagement .
