CHAPTER 4

JOSEPHIAN ARTS PROGRAMME

Challenge
Josephians are regularly challenged with performance tasks that are provocative , inspiring personal artistic responses from them . The enabling constraints develop Josephians into better learners as they innovate , problem-solve and take risks .
LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Josephian artworks were on display at the National Gallery as part of 2025 ’ s SYF Arts Presentation , ‘ Artist and Collaboration ’
Liyu Jiong Yang ( Year 5 Art 2024 ), Cohen Seah and Oliver Khoo ( Year 4 JAP Art 2024 ) with distinguished guests from various religious organisations featured in their Kembangan MRT station mural at the grand opening in February .
Curriculum Overview
In JAP Visual Arts and Music , students are stretched to achieve their artistic potential either as young artists or musicians . The programme develops Josephians through the four domains of growth , namely challenge , collaborate , coach and connect .
The aims of JAP are to encourage and enable students to :
• Develop specific skills to create art and music
• Make purposeful connections between investigation and practice
• Communicate and express artistic thoughts
• Respond to and reflect on art and music
• Be socially aware and relevant
For JAP Visual Arts , the elements of Content , Concept and Context underpin the curriculum design . For JAP Music , the elements of Explore , Experiment and Present structure the learning experiences in the curriculum .
At the heart of JAP is the use of inquiry-based learning , and students craft their investigations into ideas and issues , skills and techniques , to develop their own artistic or musical practice . JAP students also develop art and music criticism skills to analyse and interpret works by established artists and musicians .
The programme offers a variety of structured activities for students to explore , explain , extend and evaluate their learning individually and with their peers . The works that the students create hold personal resonance and connections to pertinent real-world issues such as sustainability and mental wellness .
Collaborate
Learning collaboratively helps Josephians develop higher-level thinking skills and boost their confidence and self-esteem . Through JAP , Josephians develop into expressive and reflective members of the community who value and respect one another .
