CHAPTER 5

BASKETBALL

The SJI Basketball team competed in both the B and C-Division National School Games ( NSG ) this year . The C-Division team put up an impressive performance , achieving top seeding in the preliminary rounds and narrowly missing out on qualifying for the top four teams in the South Zone , placing 3rd at the second group stage . More impressively , the team broke the record set at last year ’ s NSG by winning seven games and only losing two .
Although the B-Division team was eliminated in the preliminary round , the boys put up a valiant fight with narrow losses to some of the best teams in South Zone .
Apart from the NSG , a few members of the Basketball CCA donned their club ’ s colours to compete externally in matches such as the Rigorer Youth Cup ( Under-14 and Under-16 ) and the ActiveSG 3x3 competitions . Among the Josephians were also basketballers who played in overseas competitions and with the national team .
This year marked the Basketball CCA ’ s inaugural invitational tournament for the C-Division , which saw them hosting schools such as Unity Secondary and North Vista Secondary . Josephians placed 4th in this tournament .
The CCA also ran Direct School Admissions selection trials for the first time this year . SJI proved a popular choice , with a total of 83 Primary 6 applicants hoping to secure a place as Year 1 basketballers in SJI .
Sporting achievements aside , the Basketball CCA collaborated with SJI Squash players to run a clothes donation drive earlier in the year . Over the 2-week collection period , students and teachers supported the CCAs heartily with their generous donations , which were passed on to The Salvation Army in Singapore .
Overall , it has undoubtedly been an exhilarating year for the SJI Basketball team .
