CHAPTER 4
INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION IN HONG KONG
This trip to Hong Kong aimed to raise awareness of knowledge acquisition via an alternate language , understand the cultural impetus of Hong Kong ’ s success , and to interpret the impact of changing culture on Hong Kong ’ s society . Accompanying 37 Year 3 students from different classes were Mr Krison Tan , Ms Koh Dee Yong , Ms Darrell Foo , Ms Tan Kah Choon , Ms Valerie Koh , and Mr Karthickeyen Govindaraj .
Before the trip , all 37 Josephians recorded a video clip about their social life to share with the Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College ( HCY ) students . It was to provide HCY students glimpses into the lives of Singaporean youth . During the 5-day trip in Hong Kong , Josephians attended lessons with their Hong Kong buddies in the mornings at HCY . Some of the lessons they attended were taught in the English Language while other lessons like Chinese Language , Chinese History , Chinese Literature , Life Education , Music and Visual Arts were taught in Cantonese . This immersive experience helped to raise the students ’ awareness that deep learning could occur in languages other than English .
In addition , a presentation of ‘ The Impact of the Different Languages on Social Life & Culture in Singapore ’ was carried out by Ng Kang Jie Kaejay ( ML302 ), Asher Au Zheng Hao ( MN302 ), Quinlen Ben Low ( LE303 ), and Wesley Yeow ( LE302 ) at the school hall for their Form 4 and Form 5 classmates . Joshua Pang Hong Yih ( ML302 ), Isaac Jordan Nelson ( ML302 ), Michael John Reutens ( LE302 ), and Noah Ong Tian Hong ( LE302 ) also presented on ‘ The Impact of the Different Languages on Education & Identity in Singapore ’ to their HCY peers .
In the afternoons , the students visited cultural destinations such as Man Mo Temple , Hong Kong Heritage Museum , Hong Kong Palace Museum , Hong Kong Museum of Arts and Tai Kwun . The task assigned for the students to complete was to choose three references each day at the various venues of cultural significance to explain and justify their significance to Hong Kong ’ s identity .
The intended learning for the students when they visit the five destinations was to appreciate that they serve as prominent symbols of the city ’ s rich cultural heritage . Hong Kong ’ s rapid urbanisation and economic growth in recent decades have led to increased exposure to Western influences and a shift towards a more cosmopolitan lifestyle . As a result , traditional cultural practices and customs may have diminished in importance for younger generations , who now embrace a more globalised identity .
As Hong Kong continues to evolve , various initiatives have emerged to preserve and revitalise traditional cultural practices , including those associated with Man Mo Temple ,
