Learning Journeys

Education and Career Guidance

Over three weeks in late August and early September , about 70 Year 5 students participated in an online medical internship with Dr Eugene Loke . From this experience , students learned that medicine is not so much about chemistry and biology but about relationships and people . The Year 5 students were also linked up with SJI alumni who are now medical students in their first or second year , to learn about what it takes when pursuing a medical degree and how to prepare for medical school . If COVID-19 restrictions are lifted , these students will have an opportunity to physically intern with Dr Loke in the future .
SJI ’ s Education and Career Guidance ( ECG ) committee offered students many career-related events this year , such as the Career Wheel Programme at the Lifelong Learning Institution ( LLI ) in January and the learning journey to Home Team Academy at MHA in February . During the Career Wheel Programme , the Year 4 students participated in a range of hands-on activities to highlight different aspects of their talents and possible careers they could consider . Adapting our plans due to COVID-19 , the boys took their learning online in March and April to hear from PSG volunteers on communication and conflict management skills . Through Google Meet , students participated in role-playing scenarios that reflected the kind of conflicts found in any workplace .
To conclude the year on 21 October , the Year 5 students learned about the importance of adaptability in today ’ s evolving workforce from a sharing by four SJI teachers who made a mid-career switch . The panel advised students on how to develop soft skills and broaden their experiences to be more flexible and willing to change their career plans for various reasons .
For the Year 5 IP students , the Singapore National Co-operative Federation ( SNCF ) hosted a week-long programme about co-operative awareness at the start of January . In small groups , students developed business plans for an imagined co-operative with guidance from co-operative personnel and gave a ten-minute presentation pitching their business plans to the judges . The best business plan competed in the Creathon 2020 , a competition where teams develop innovative solutions for social challenges . Although SJI did not win , this was a meaningful opportunity for our students to learn how a business model can support the community and still turn in a profit .
SJI ’ s Post-Secondary Education Institutes ( PSEI ) Virtual Fair on 12 October was a platform for parents and Year 3 students to find out more about the JC and Polytechnic education pathways . It was a platform for parents and students to connect directly to a diverse panel of speakers including deputy principals , heads of departments , and recent graduates via Zoom . Our boys were keen to learn about the different schools and their specialized programmes , and gained a better understanding of what the schools offer and where their interests lie so that they can make more informed choices in future . The next day , the Year 3 boys also participated in the Josephiansat-Large Virtual Fair , an online event organised by the SJI Old Boys Association that brought more than 25 alumni together where they shared their career journeys from various industries .
