As the Vice-President of the Student Council from 2019- 2020 , Koh Tze Shyan Benjamin has shown what it means to put others and the community before oneself . In this role , Benjamin has honed his leadership skills and decision-making ability . He learnt to work effectively with others , manage peers , and chair meeting sessions to manage several school projects such as Teacher ’ s Day Celebrations , Prom / Graduation Night , Racial Harmony Day Commemoration and Orientation Camp . More importantly , being part of the SJI Student Council is something close to his heart . To him , this is a service to the school that he loves . And it is through this love for his school that he is able to overcome the stress , tiredness , and conflicts encountered while serving as the Vice-President . In this role , he has shown himself to be a responsible leader , passionate about serving the school community and can be trusted to complete any task given to him .
Benjamin helps out at church every Sunday , where he facilitates Primary 5 boys in one of the programme , Teen Encounter . He took care of the kids and spent time discussing and teaching them about God and about the Bible . This is a meaningful work for him personally as his faith as a Christian is very important to him . It brings him joy when he is able to mentor and guide the young in their faith journey .
Benjamin went to Bamboo School , Thailand in November 2019 as part of his Global Education Programme ( GEP ). It was a service-learning trip where he assisted the locals to build a plantation , which will provide the children with a sustainable source of food and income . He also built a bamboo hut and brooms . Benjamin interacted with the stateless children in the school and was awed by their kindness and generosity , despite having so little . This experience has taught him humility , empathy and gratitude . He learnt that people who grow up in different circumstances for example , those who were refugees or from less privileged backgrounds does not make them completely different people . The children shared similar interest , humour and had a cheery attitude , giving thanks for all that they had . It was indeed an eyeopening experience for him .
Benjamin is a driven and motivated person . He is excellent at time-management and possesses much discipline . He worked hard and put in effort in every assignment and task given to him .
