Basil Tan Song Sze ( TG604 )
Basil Tan Song Sze is an honest and level-headed student . Humble and sensitive in his interaction with others , his friendly demeanour and caring nature ensures him a place amongst his peers . An independent worker , Basil fulfills his responsibilities promptly and efficiently , with minimal fanfare .
A passionate learner , Basil excels in critically assessing information , and enjoys in-depth discussion of ideas and is keen to learn from new sources . As a diligent and hardworking student , Basil is resilient when faced with setbacks , and takes ownership of his learning . Respectful towards his teachers and peers , he is receptive to feedback and advice given by both friends and teachers alike .
Apart from academic pursuits , Basil was an active member of the wider school community As an active member of the National Cadet Corps ( NCC Air ), he served as the Assistant Sergeant Major ( 2016 – 2017 ), and was the Overall In- Charge of the NCC Company Camp . Basil was awarded the NCC Outstanding Cadet Award and was selected to represent St Joseph ’ s Institution in the National Day Parade in 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the NCC . Basil also served the school as the Deputy Head Prefect in 2017 where he helped plan and execute numerous school-based events which included the 2017 Inaugural Concert . He demonstrated perseverance and commitment in the organisation of these events . For his outstanding contributions , the school presented Basil with the Spirit of SJI in 2017 and the Distinguished Lasallian Leadership and Service Award in 2019 , which celebrates a Josephian ’ s exemplary service to the community .
Basil was a dedicated member of the 6th Student ’ s Council from 2018 to 2019 . As the General Secretary and Treasurer of the council , Basil played an integral part in the administrative details of the council as well as managing and accounting for the finances of the different working committee projects and events within the senior school student council . Some of the activities that the student council planned that Basil and his team spearheaded were the Christmas party in 2018 as well as the Orientation Camp and Council Elections in 2019 . In all these pursuits , he was always interested in the welfare of the people he was working with or serving and was always able to address the concerns of all parties . For all his efforts , Basil was nominated for the prestigious Teo Cheng Guan Student Leader Award for his contributions to the school community .
Basil was also part of the organising committee of students who were involved in the school ’ s Global Education Programme ( GEP ) to Luang Prabang , Laos in November 2018 , where he learnt the importance of giving back to local communities . Apart from being active volunteer with the Handicap Welfare Association ( 2014-2017 ), Basil ’ s compassion for the less fortunate was also evident through his active participation in SJI ’ s social entrepreneurship club , PRISM . Basil and his team took part in the Youth-For-Causes programme where he volunteered as a photographer and helped out backstage for the Heartstrings concert . Basil also extended his services to the Riding with Disabilities Association ( RDA ) in 2018 , where he , together with some of his peers , participated as a walker for children with various mental and physical disabilities . His devotion towards helping the underprivileged was admirable and his peers often looked up to him in this respect .
Basil has proved to be a very dependable and responsible student , and has the ability to go far in life with his deep commitment to serve others .
