It is the established tradition in SJI to present the Senior Josephian of the Year Award to a graduating student who has displayed all-round ability , outstanding leadership and best exemplifies our core Lasallian values of Faith , Service and Community .
When we think of a leader , several qualities spring to mind . That person is someone who is outstanding in both character and studies , one who is an excellent role model and is selfless , humble , responsible and helpful . James Aidan Slade Lim En is one person who possesses these qualities and more .
James is a remarkable young gentleman who truly exemplifies the qualities of a true Josephian , reflecting a strong sense of faith , community and service . He is constantly giving of his time and energy for the benefit of others . With his initiative and dedication , he has been able to make a positive change to many within the SJI community . Possessing extraordinary leadership qualities , James served as Class Chairman , Prefect and Captain of the ‘ B ’ Division Rugby Team before becoming Head Prefect and President of the Student Council in 2019 . In his role as a leader in many school-based activities , he was able to motivate his peers to work together towards a common goal and effect positive change .
Teacher mentor of the Student Council , Ms Wong Kah Yan shares , “ As Head Prefect , James has the ability to engage the student community from Year 1 - 6 . He makes the effort to find out about what is going on in their lives and I believe this is because of the genuine love he has for his peers , something that he spoke about in his speech during the Council Investiture . He is an ideal role model who has made an impact on his peers , in the firm and fair manner he works with them and in the way he carries himself , with the right measure of confidence and humility .”
James ’ form tutors , Ms Rita Roop and Ms Tan Kah Choon , who have witnessed his growth and development over the last two years , remark , “ James is a true leader whose genuine concern for others and unwavering commitment to service is admirable . He approached his endeavours and commitments as Head Prefect with dignity , professionalism and with a strong awareness of purpose . He is truly a bother to his juniors .”
Academically , James demonstrates a keen attitude towards learning and takes great pride in consistently producing quality work . He sets high academic goals for himself and displays strong determination and grit in achieving them . Ms Kassandra Lim , his Biology teacher states , “ James is a committed and driven person who seizes every opportunity to develop his interests to the fullest . Self-motivated and focused , James shows remarkable determination to improve . He does not give up easily in spite of obstacles and perseveres by putting in more effort and seeking clarifications when in doubt . Confident and independent , he can be relied upon to carry out his duties efficiently . James also interacts well with his teachers and peers and contributes actively to class discussions . He is very considerate , shows care and concern for his classmates
and is always encouraging his peers . He approaches life and work with a sense of purpose and meaning ”.
James ’ personal strengths are as impressive as his intellectual accomplishment . Putting others before himself , he is undoubtedly a respected leader who inspires and supports those around him . He speaks with confidence while remaining open-minded when communicating with others and rallying the community to work towards a common goal . He is kind and compassionate and serves as a supportive confidant to his peers . Joshua Tay , his classmate notes , “ Like the fish that swims against the currents , James is unafraid to stand up to peer pressure and dissent . As Mr Syaifudin , our Discipline Master famously quoted , ‘ Wrong is wrong when everyone is doing it , and right is right when nobody is doing it ’ - James certainly does it right !”
Greatly committed to his Co-Curricular Activity , Rugby , James is driven by the love for his sport to achieve personal and group excellence . Mr Alfred Nathan , teacher-in-charge of Rugby reveals , “ James was our Rugby ‘ C ’ Division Captain 2017 and he continued to be a key member of the team in the Rugby EXCO . Well known to all , James is usually not the biggest player on the field , but we would like all to know that he ’ s a tough cookie and he “ trumps ” his opposition in the tackle .”
James undoubtedly embodies the Josephian qualities of Faith , Service and Community . Always looking for ways to better the school community , he has truly been an asset to SJI .
The Senior Josephian of the Year is the highest award given by the school together with the Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam trophy . In recognition of his character , work and service , the Lasallian community at SJI proudly confers the Senior Josephian of the Year Award to James Aidan Slade Lim En .
