2019 marked a number of firsts for YoungXHUSH . In January , Summer Yu-Ning Walters ( TG617 ), together with Matthew Chang ( TG607 ) represented SJI YoungXHUSH at the “ YoungXHUSH Speaks : Inspiration for Action ” organised by Hush Teabar . Both shared about SJI YoungXHUSH development as a movement , and plans to spread the importance of mindfulness to other students , beginning with our Year 1 students . These plans came to fruition in Term two . Year 6 members of YoungXHush facilitated meditation sessions for their juniors . Applying the skills and knowledge they had acquired in the YoungXHush meetings , they ensured the objectives of these sessions were met . The objectives were to equip the Year 1s with valuable skills to cope with stress and raise awareness of mental well-being . Basic sign language were taught through games and activities , encouraging them to work with each other and reinforce what they have learnt . This was followed by a short meditation session to help relieve stress . The facilitators found the sessions fulfilling , especially when they see their juniors practising the skills that they have been taught .
YoungXHush also had the privilege of welcoming environmentalist Barney Swan to share his experience travelling to the South Pole solely on renewable technology . He addressed the Year 6 cohort , inspiring and encouraging them to practice mindfulness , while highlighting the importance of mental resilience in tumultuous times . The Year 5 members participated in a free boot camp organized by the Hush TeaBar where they were taught to practice mindfulness through deep listening , therefore fostering mutual respect and empathy . The session also taught the members to be more aware of others ’ access needs , as well as basic sign language on emotions and advocacy for the deaf-mute community . The members were separated into groups based on their mutual CAS groups , where they planned different initiatives to practice mindfulness in their respective CASes .
The Year 5 members also begun work on SJI ’ s first inter-CAS collaborative project with SJI Film Club and SJI Senior Drama Club : a short 10-minute film on mental health advocacy among teenagers . YoungXHush was heavily involved in the scripting stage of the project by ensuring that the representation of mental illness was accurate by holding discussions with experts from Hush TeaBar for advice . The film is to be submitted to the Singapore Mental Health Film Festival in 2021 , and will be made public by 2020 .
