The Ecology Club and the Green Club participated in NParks ’ “ Dragonfly Watch 2019 ”, as part of the NParks “ Community in Nature ( CIN ) Biodiversity Watch ” series . As volunteers , the students were given the opportunity to undergo dragonfly identification . From these classes , they were not only equipped with the knowledge to identify the 23 basic dragonfly species by sight , but also the protocol skills needed to organise site surveys such as determining the ‘ wildness score ’ of a water body . The students also headed to the Botanic Gardens ’ various water bodies that contributed to Singapore ’ s very own ecological database . This experience taught them insightful scientific skills and allowed them to better appreciate the fascinating biodiversity which is integral to Singapore ’ s natural landscape .
In April this year , the Ecology Club collaborated with the Green Club to create a “ Plastic Wave ” installation . This was one of our initiatives taken to commemorate Earth Week , specifically to raise SJI ’ s awareness towards the issue of marine plastic pollution . Comprising of used plastic bottles collected from the school population , the plastic wave art installation serves as a visual representation of the gravity of plastic pollution – acting as a metaphorical ‘ wave ’ of rubbish which will inundate our planet if left unchecked . Through this installation , it is hoped that everyone will realise the necessity to be more prudent in their usage of plastics , making a concerted effort to protect the oceans ’ marine species and ultimately , the future of our planet .

The Ecology Club also continued its Native Species planting project . Leveraging on the Biodiversity theme , they were blessed to secure a site on the school campus that will be left untouched . This plot will be planted with native Singaporean species to promote flora and fauna growth within SJI !
