SJI ’ s Astronomy Club had a fruitful development this year . With the newly elected leaders of the club , many new enriching plans have been outlined to boost Astronomy Club into a far more appealing and enhanced CAS option for the students .
The 4 main events that the Astronomy Club have successfully held and participated in are : the Club ’ s Night Session , Raffles Institution ’ s ( RI ) Astronite , Astrochallenge and the SAND 2019 Dinner by Astronomy . SG .
Locating Jupiter
The SAND Dinner held in ITE College East , helped members of various Astronomy Clubs across Singapore to interact and connect with each other . Our SJI Astronomy members connected with Astronomer from NUS , who subsequently helped us out at our Club ’ s Night Session . The Night Session enabled our members to step out of their comfort zone and communicate with others beyond SJI and to learn how they conduct their astronomy sessions .
Our main participant in the Astrochallenge , Bella Sentosa , says , “ Through my participation in Astrochallenge , I was given the opportunity to build upon my love for stargazing with higher level astrophysics and basic observation skills . It was also a privilege to get to know other youth astronomers from various schools and collaborate and compete with them in growing our passion for astronomy .”
Aligning the telescope
The RI Astronite served as an example of a model for our Club . Our members learned that astronomy should not be portrayed in a distant , overly intellectual manner , but to be presented as a ‘ food-for-thought ’ to the public . In order to garner greater interest in astronomy , they should not be intimidated by the technicalities , but be curious to explore what science has to offer .
