Many misinterpret Judo as a violent sport due to its combative nature . However , the gentle way cultivates humility and respect on and off the Judo mat . The National Schools Judo Championships 2018 was a test of one ’ s mind and spirit . Yeo Jun Jie Lucius ( FN302 ) won the -60kg Lightweight Bronze Medal . Goh Jun Wei ( ML402 ) brought home the -93kg Heavyweight Gold Medal , after 13 minutes of straight grueling sparring . Their bravery and resilience , even at times that seemed bleak , led SJI to the 3 rd overall placing in the ‘ B ’ Division National Schools Judo Championships .
As Jigoro Kano , Founder of Judo , said “ Bowing is an expression of gratitude and respect . In effect , you are thanking your opponent for giving you the opportunity to improve your technique ”. Similar to how we bow to our Sensei ( teacher ) before and after each lesson , our team is grateful for the continuous support and efforts from our Sensei , Coach Ngo Yeeling , and our teachers , Ms Kassandra Lim and Ms Therese Tan . In gratitude , the farewell party held in June for the Year 4 seniors , was our way of thanking our seniors , the “ opponents for giving ( us ) the opportunity to improve ( our ) technique ”.
