CHAPTER FOUR
Athletics , Football and Hockey IE Trip On 12 November 2018 , the Year 3 athletes from SJI ’ s Athletics , Football and Hockey CCAs travelled to Bangkok to learn more about our Thai neighbours , and to assist and serve 2 groups in the village of Saraburi .
During the five-day trip , the student athletes taught Thai students aged 10 to 12 years old how to make fashionable wrist bands from cord , and helped them learnt English through a fun and simple ‘ Pictionary ’ game . In return , the Thai students taught the SJI boys how to make ‘ krathong ’, a traditional decorated basket that is floated on a river during the Loi Krathong festival , to represent the wishes and hopes of the people who create and float the baskets .
The boys also aided the village to build a concrete platform , the refurbishment of a home and painted some walls . In the midst of their hard work , the boys took turns to experience a guided tour of the small economic activities of the village - from growing mushrooms , to rearing catfish and frogs , and weaving rugs from recycled cloth .
Our boys learnt how to make Krathong baskets from banana leaves for the Loy Krathong festival
The team received a warm welcome in Thailand
