The Ecology club has had an exciting year . In February , there was the visit to Hort Park and Commonwealth Secondary School to learn about the planting of native Singaporean plant species .

May saw a year-long collaboration with NParks and the national biodiversity movement , BioBlitz where students surveyed native species . From Olive- Backed Sunbird nest sightings to yellow-tailed Dragonfly sightings within the school vicinity , these observations were uploaded to the national biodiversity database via the “ SGBioAtlas ” mobile phone app . The CAS group created the project Bioblitz @ SJI as part of the National Biodiversity database , and species seen around the school are recorded there .
Furthermore , the Ecology Club took part in a green symposium themed “ Climate Change - Impact on Society and Economy ”, hosted in National Junior College . Members of the Ecology club attended talks by Dr Lena Chan and Dr Winston , both of whom are esteemed individuals in the field of Biodiversity and climate change .
In August , “ The Last Straw ” initiative was launched . Concerned that students excessively use straws to consume their drinks without regard to the dire environmental impact of this action , such as marine pollution , we were determined to change this by advocating against the use of straws . This would be accomplished in a series of ways : through our educational posters , speeches and direct collaboration with the shops inside the school canteen .
