Lasallian Distinguished Service Award

SHAUN HUE YONG SHAN ( FN 402 )

An all-rounded student who has outstanding academic results , extraordinary achievements and contributions to the community , Shaun Hue exemplifies the virtues of a true Josephian .

In his servant-leadership growth and development , Shaun has served as a Prefect , a Peer Support Leader and a Peer Support Facilitator . He has also served as President of the SJI Drama Club . With a charisma that inspires confidence and respect , Shaun was appointed Overall-in- Charge of the 2016 Secondary One Orientation Camp . He was also Deputy in-Charge of the Liaisons sub-committee of the 2016 Carnival Planning Team . He was integral to the organization and success of the Drama Festival ‘ Strawberry Generation ’ and in earning a Distinction for the SJI Drama Club in the Singapore Youth Festival in 2016 .
Ms . Charlene Goh , Shaun ’ s Peer Support Facilitator teacher , speaks well of him . “ Shaun is a spontaneous and reliable individual who can be trusted with responsibilities . He also volunteered as an emcee , showing his eagerness to leverage on his strengths to serve his community . It is unquestionable that Shaun is a Man for Others who gains the respect of his peers through his humble deeds of service .”
His CCA teacher , Ms . Lim Boon Siang , compliments him . “" Shaun is a visionary leader who is highly sensitive to the needs and sentiments of the boys in Drama Club . His heart beats in tandem with theirs . Yet in his subtle and unassuming way , he magically grows
them by challenging them to better themselves and conquer obstacles along the way ."
In his growth to becoming a compassionate and competent leader , Shaun still maintains stellar academic achievements , including clinching the Certificate of Distinction in both ‘ The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art ’ ( Grade 3 ) and the ‘ Australian Mathematics Competition ’ ( Year 7 ), the Edusave Certificate of Academic Achievement in 2014 and 2015 , the ‘ Young Defence Scientists Programme ’ Scholarship and the Goh Sin Tub trophy in English in 2015 .
Shaun places community service close to his heart . He has participated in many Values in Action Projects , including the cleaning of one-room flats , accompanying the disabled elderly in the ‘ Silver Outings ’ project and even assisting overseas during his Overseas Residential Programme to Vietnam . In recognition of his exceptional dedication towards the community , he was among the four Secondary Four students shortlisted for the prestigious Teo Cheng Guan Scholarship
His form tutors , Ms . Lynette Lin and Ms . Kassandra Lim , share the same opinion of Shaun . “ Shaun shows a passion for life and is a well-adjusted young man who excels in his academics and executes his responsibilities with much initiative and zeal . He is respectful , courteous and carries a strong sense of pride in being a Josephian , displaying a strong sense of faith , service and community .”
TAN YI LONG ( ML 402 )

An exemplary student , Yi Long exhibits many ideals and values espoused by the school . Selfdriven and resilient , he is unafraid of hard work and always strives to give his best . His personable and good-natured disposition puts people at ease and has earned the respect of his peers and teachers alike . Academically , Yi Long adopts a positive attitude towards learning . He is very motivated , conscientious and sets high academic targets for himself . His talent in Maths was recognised early and he was placed in the Talent Maths Programme in 2013 to 2014 . He was awarded the Edusave Merit Bursary in 2015 .

As Chairman of the National Police Cadet Corps ( NPCC ) Unit , he participated in national competitions and oversaw the planning and execution of all NPCC programmes ranging from unit camps to Area Games Day . Besides being the Best Cadet in 2013 and 2015 , he was appointed Station Inspector , the highest rank in the unit , in 2016 . This year , he also represented the school in the National Police Annual Parade ( NPAP ) in the Guard-of-Honour ( GOH ) contingent and was conferred the Singapore Police Force ( SPF-NPCC ) award , the highest award for outstanding leadership . He was the Parade Commander for the school ’ s 164th Anniversary Parade in 2016 .
Ms Lynette Lim , his NPCC teacher , is full of praise for him , “ Yi Long is an outstanding Chairman whose presence has a positive impact on his peers . He is an objective and meticulous role model who works well under pressure and an equally reflective leader who constantly seeks improvement . He displays strong moral courage and
is an inspiring leader with foresight . Placing the Unit before himself , he has a heart to serve and lead . He is definitely deserving of the Lasallian Distinguished Service Award .”
His achievements have gained him recognition not only within the Uniformed Groups , but also in other areas . He received the Teo Cheng Guan Scholarship Award , which recognizes students for remarkable leadership in CCA . His strong leadership skills had been evident since his early years in SJI . He was Class Chairman in Lower Secondary , Class Vice- Chairman in Upper Secondary , Peer Support Leader in 2015 and Peer Support Facilitator in 2016 . Despite his achievements , Yi Long remains humble and continues to serve the community in his own selfless way . He spent countless hours in the finance committee planning the 2016 school Carnival . He even extended his service to the wider community , contributing to projects such as the Straits Times Pocket Money Flag Day , Metropolitan Young Men ’ s Christian Association ( MYMCA ) one-room flat cleaning , Lenten Project to help needy families and an overseas service learning trip to Hanoi in 2016 .
His form tutor , Ms Gina Tan , shares , “ Yi Long shows responsibility and commitment when carrying out duties as the Class Vice- Chairman . He takes pride in his work and has the ability to strike a good balance between his academic and non-academic pursuits .”
Yi Long is indeed a well-rounded student who exemplifies the Josephian spirit . His maturity and tenacity will see him through future endeavours as he grows to become a person SJI is proud of .
