SJIOBA Sportsman of the Year

Ng Shao Han Elliot ( Fintan 401 / 2015 )

It is the established tradition in SJI to present the Senior Josephian of the Year Award to a graduating student who has displayed all round ability , outstanding leadership and best exemplifies our core Lasallian values of Faith , Service and Community .
When we think of a leader , several qualities spring to mind - someone who is outstanding in both character and studies , selfless , active , helpful and a good role model to his peers . Noah Joel Lopez is one person who possesses these qualities and more . He joined SJI in 2013 when he was in Secondary Two , having completed his education at St . Gabriel ’ s Primary School and one year at Maris Stella High School . He adapted very quickly and committed himself to his Co-Curricular Activity ( CCA ), NCC ( Land ). His entry to SJI was just the start of more things to come .
He is a rare gem who can make the difference in whatever role he performs . As a Prayer Leader , he took his role seriously and would pray for his class , teachers and school frequently . His sense of duty then led him to seek office in the Student Council where he went on to be the Vice-President of the Student Council and Deputy Head Prefect . With his new-found roles , he had to lead a large community of student leaders and plan school-wide events . He was involved in organising and executing various school-based projects such as Hair for Hope , SJI Carnival and Orientation Camp . Behind every success we have untold stories of grit and determination and Noah is definitely not one unfamiliar to challenges . He knows very well the value of perseverance .
Mr Chong Chow Wee , teacher-in-charge of the Student Council , comments , “ Noah has answered our mater ’ s call to serve and he has done it well . He can be trusted to make sound decisions and to do the right thing . And if the decision turns out to be less than sound , he will be the first to take responsibility for his shortcomings
and seek to address his mistake and to do better the next time . Among his many attributes are his courage to admit his shortcomings , his humility in taking ownership of his mistakes and his wisdom to learn from them . These fine traits make him an exceptional Deputy Head Prefect . He has , without a doubt , developed into a fine young man and will be no doubt be a responsible and benevolent member of society .”
His teacher mentors from NCC ( Land ), Miss Josephine Wee and Miss Linda So , note , “ As Assistant Company Sergeant Major , Noah was always around to encourage , advise and care for his peers and juniors with whom he had excellent rapport with . Despite his role as the Deputy Head Prefect , he continued to serve the unit with pride and dedication . His humility touched the hearts of many who respect him not only for his leadership but for the person he is and the values he stands for .”
Mrs Mishaelle Chua , Form Tutor and English Language teacher , remarks , “ If I were to name one quality that sets him apart from all other student leaders , it would be his intuitiveness . Noah has the foresight to pre-empt the missing gaps in a situation and the heart to fill them in . Many a time , I have witnessed him being a friend to a less well-liked peer or mediate in a class forum when it gets unruly . He would also sit with a friend to help him in his schoolwork or counsel him . Such is the sensitivity and charisma of a communitybuilder .”
Unquestionably , Noah is a self-directed learner and sets high expectations for himself . He is an avid reader and competent writer . His reflective essays have often won him commendation from his teachers . He has consistently produced sterling academic results in his Upper Secondary examination .
Mr Lee Han Seng , Noah ’ s Elementary and Additional Mathematics teacher , asserts , “ Every class will have one or two heroes
like the Ghostbusters whom teachers can call upon for help . Noah is one such student . He is certainly one I can call upon and trust because I know that he will complete the given task to the best of his ability . Furthermore , Noah is generous in sharing his knowledge and time with his peers . He also keeps a lookout for his schoolmates who face trials and always attempts to rally others to help .”
In spite of his busy schedule , Noah makes time to care for others . His personal belief that leadership is about working with others has brought him many friends . Rayner Callistus Ramraj , his classmate , reveals , “ I have always known Noah to be an encouraging person . Despite the many roles that he has to juggle , he will always look out for others . Noah also went beyond the call of duty as a Prayer Leader . Instead of limiting spirituality to the beginning of each lesson , he organised prayer sessions , especially when our co-form tutor was delivering her baby and when one of our classmates went through a brain operation .” In addition , Jeremiah Jed Chong , his co-partner for the SJI Carnival , recalls , “ I was new to the role of Stalls I / C but Noah made it a point to guide me so that I could carry out my duties . As I was away for competition for a period of time , Noah would update me and make me feel part of the team . He has showed me what it means to be a Man for Others and for this , I am grateful .”
Indeed , Noah possesses the acumen of a leader , sensitivity of a friend and charisma of a community-builder . It is evident that he is one who attempts his best to live and exemplify the ethos and values of the school .
The Senior Josephian of the Year is the highest award given by the school together with the Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam trophy . In recognition of his character , work and service , the Lasallian community at SJI proudly confers the Senior Josephian of the Year Award to Noah Joel Lopez .
Ng Shao Han Elliot joined SJI from Holy Innocents Primary School . He distinguished himself in his primary school as captain of the football team . With stellar PSLE results , he successfully qualified for a place in SJI and more so , a place in the coveted football team which was formed in 2012 after a long hiatus .
Elliot has been a member of the National Football Academy ( NFA ) age group team and been training with them in addition to our own school training since Secondary One . In spite of his very busy schedule , he has been able to balance his academic and Co-Curricular Activities commitments .
As a member of the NFA team , he first represented Singapore at the Japan-East ASEAN Football Exchange Programme U-14 Football Festival in Osaka , Japan in 2012 . Although he was then a member of the U-13 squad , he was made a temporary member of the U-14 squad so he could join the older boys in representing Singapore in that competition . The following year he played in the 2nd Asian Youth Games in Nanjing , China . The next major competition was this year ’ s 26th Lion City Cup held in Singapore , where the team took 3rd place .
His teacher-in-charge of Football , Mr Bernard Teo has this to say of Elliot , “ he is highly regarded by his team mates who look up to him for guidance and inspiration on and off the field . So strong is his presence that when Elliot was not around for a particular match in 2013 , they lost that crucial game which stopped our progress in the National rounds towards the Semi-Finals .”
He is an unassuming and humble person who goes about his work with quiet determination . He was captain of the team in 2013 and 2015 . One of his proudest moments must definitely be when he led our boys onto the field for the National Inter-School ‘ B ’ Division Football Championship Finals at the SUTD stadium this year - a first for SJI
in 37 years ! It is a historic moment that this batch of graduating students will talk about for years to come , just like the old boys from the 70s and earlier who have taken pride in their achievements .
Elliot is a fine example of a Josephian who embodies the ideals of the school , excelling in both sports and studies and yet staying very rooted to the ground , displaying all the qualities we expect from a fine Josephian .
