Community Builder The four houses of Michael , Lawrence , Marcian and Fintan saw a surge of activities when Dr Koh revamped structures . He strengthened the idea of community through the introduction of the four houses across the six levels . Classes were also renamed according to these houses . It was initially a novelty to have classes named after prominent La Salle Brothers but it went beyond just a naming convention . It brought students across levels together , created a sense of identity and belonging and opportunities for leadership with the appointment of House Captains . School functions such as Sports Day and the Cross Country Run were brought to another level through fraternity cheers and friendly competition .
Partnership as Key Considerable progress was also made to involve our parents and alumni with the school . Working with the Parent Support Group Executive Committee , a parent representative system was formed for the classes with the aim of getting more parents involved in children ’ s learning and to tap on the pool of parent volunteers for school programmes and activities . An outcome of this was the formation of a Special Interest Group of parents for students with special needs .
“ Boys , come Home for Dinner ” – a tagline that many an old boy will remember in a series of homecoming dinners to reconnect
SJI with the Alumni . Dr Koh made it a point to attend all the dinners where he encouraged old boys to re-establish links with their alma mater . His work with the SJI Old Boys Association also saw the inauguration of Josephian at Large , an annual programme where old boys from various industries are invited to inspire the graduating cohort of Josephians interested in specific career fields .
Under Dr Koh ’ s leadership , the Fullerton-SJI Leadership Lecture series , in partnership with The Fullerton Hotel Singapore , were started in 2010 to showcase the views of the distinguished alumni of SJI , all of whom have had a major impact on Singapore and
Started Campus Redevelopment of Malcolm Road Campus Collaborating with the alumni , Dr Koh also launched the fund-raising drive for the redevelopment of Malcolm Road campus , which saw a string of fund-raising events such as charity golf and movie screening .
Dr Koh was very clear about how he wanted the campus to be redeveloped into - a place where active learning can take place and which supports the ideals of the IB . One could easily tell from his involvement in the design development that his focus was on the well-being and cohesiveness of the students , teachers , and staff .
An Avid Football Fan Dr Koh could never say “ No ” to any request to promote soccer . He agreed to what initially appeared to be a ludicrous proposal by the Student Council to allow the live screening of the 2014 World Cup , a move that brought Josephian soccer fans together . He resurrected soccer in 2011 after a 37 year hiatus and in just four years , the “ B ” Division soccer boys defeated Singapore Sports School at the National Schools Semi-Finals to earn a coveted place in the finals against defending champion Hong Kah Secondary School . The venue where the finals was played did not have the capacity to hold the entire school population . His quickthinking and “ can-do ” spirit , together with his well-established old-boys network , saw the lower secondary and JC2 students supporting the soccer boys with live-streaming of the match within the school premises . It was a day that will be remembered by every soccer enthusiast and by all donning the green and white colours of the school – we lost the match but we won with a wonderful display of Josephian camaraderie and spirit .
God ’ s Grace God gave us seven years of time by way of Dr Koh – seven excellent years ! Dr Koh has devoted these seven illustrious years to providing opportunities to both teachers and students to explore , experiment and encounter ! Thank you , Dr Koh for the love you have given us in your tenure as Principal . You have enhanced the quality of education in SJI , built on the fine traditions established by the La Salle Brothers and taken us on a phenomenal learning journey , one that many in the SJI community will embrace and remember .
Singaporeans . These distinguished alumni shared their experiences in particular those leadership moments from which the audience will be able to draw lessons on the art of leadership and grow in awareness of the key considerations in the decisionmaking process . The lectures were collated and reproduced into two books - “ Lead your life ” and “ Lasallian Pathfinders : Of Ordinary Men and Less Ordinary Leadership ”.
Despite the tight budget and unexpected technical challenges encountered , he never hesitated to do his best to solve the problems . He was able to assess accurately the overall situation and then sought help to effectively overcome the problems .
Working closely together with the campus redevelopment committee , Dr Koh was also very quick in picking up knowledge relating to the building and construction trades and was able to make meaningful contributions to the design development . The masterplan was finally completed and unveiled by President Tony Tan on 20 July this year .
