We started 2015 on a very happy note . Both our pioneer cohort of our International Baccalaureate ( IB ) Diploma students from the Senior School and our boys from the secondary school achieved outstanding results in the IB Diploma examinations and GCE ‘ O ’ level examinations respectively . We are proud that our students were able to do incredibly well academically despite having to adapt to studying in our holding school in Bishan a year ago .
The redevelopment at our Malcolm Road campus has finally begun after much unexpected delay . We had the honour of having President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam , alumnus from Class of 1958 , to unveil our new masterplan and broke the ground at Malcolm Road on 20 July . We were also pleased that Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean , alumnus from Class of 1970 / 72 , took the time to attend the ground breaking ceremony . The SJI campus redevelopment project marks a significant milestone in our 163 years history . With the introduction of the Integrated Programme ( IP ) and the IB Diploma Programme in 2013 , there has been a need for SJI to look into the redevelopment of its campus to meet new requirements . There is also a need to critically refurbish existing facilities and buildings which are now more than 25 years old . Since 2011 , we have been working on the redevelopment of the Malcolm Road campus to ensure that it is able to meet the demands of education in the 21st century . Construction has been progressing well , despite some hiccups we faced in the piling works during the initial phase .

Fr ( Dr ) Adrian Danker , an alumnus from Class of 1981 , will take over the stewardship of SJI from next year . I have every confidence that SJI is in good hands for the next phase of the school ’ s development . I am sure Fr Danker , being an alumnus , is very familiar with SJI brand of education and will continue to provide a balanced and holistic Lasallian Catholic education with a strong emphasis on character formation and leadership development for all the students placed under our care .

Another milestone for us this year was when our B-Division soccer boys beat Singapore Sports School at the National Schools Semi- Finals on 22 July to earn a place in the Finals . SJI went into the game as underdogs . It was a closely fought game ending with a score of 2-2 after full time . SJI was in the lead in both occasions before the Singapore Sports School equalised . We won on penalty shot out with a score of 5-4 . This is the first time the SJI Football team which was revived in 2011 , has made it to the National Finals after 37 years . SJI last won the B-Division title in 1978 . When we re-started soccer at SJI 4 years ago , I certainly did not expect our boys to the reach the National School Finals so soon . To be able to reach the National Semi-Finals is already a big achievement for us . Although we didn ’ t win against the defending champions Hong Kah Secondary School , I am personally happy to have the chance of watching the boys played their very best with the whole school cheering them on in the Finals in my last year of office as Principal . |
