The Odyssey

World & Me

Secondary Four IP students had the opportunity to undergo a career-training programme endorsed by Junior Achievement Singapore on 28 and 29 August 2015 . The unique nature of the Odyssey programme required parents and alumni volunteers to be the trainers of the modules . This enhanced the students ’ learning as the volunteers know the ethos of the school well . Coupled with their own working experiences , the volunteers were also better able to infuse their knowledge into the training curriculum . Students had fun learning about how to achieve ‘ career success ’ and the kind of jobs that would suit their character . This experience provided the boys with real-world exposure to the profession of their choice and allowed them to examine the intricacies of the working world .

As part of their World & Me programme , the Secondary Four IP students have to partake in a service attachment to a local organisation to understand how they render their services to the community at large . Some of the students helped out at the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council , others at PAYM Service Learning Champion ( Bishan Homes ) and the rest with Central Singapore CDC . This was a great opportunity for the students to understand how these organisations work to improve the lives of the people in the community . This reinforces our mission that SJI students need to be Men for Others – where service rendered , no matter how small , will have a positive impact on others .
