Throughout 2014 , the Malay Cultural Society ( MCS ) has participated in several activities inside and outside of school . Among the highlights of 2014 was the society ’ s participation in the grand opening of the Ministry of Education Language Centre ( MOELC ) in Bishan and also its involvement in Racial Harmony day . To enforce camaraderie and foster stronger bonds within MCS , we carried out multiple fun and meaningful actvities during our weekly sessions . An example would be the Secondary 1 orientation during the first session . Additionally we also took part in a wide array of workshops to build our sense of identity as the Malay community . Such workshops include Silat ( Malay Martial Art ) and learning how to play the angklung ( traditional Malay instrument ). Thus such activities over the course of this year has managed to uphold the presence of the Malay culture in SJI .
The SJI MCS booth at the Grand Opening of MOELC entitled “ Move your Mind ”
Grand Opening of MOELC : In April , the MCS represented SJI in the grand opening of the MOELC . As ambassadors of the school , weeks of preparation had to go into the booth which was set up in the grand opening . Our booth aimed to improve the Malay language ability of students who attended this grand occasion . Also we had the utmost pleasure and privelege to meet up with old boy , now Deputy Prime Minister , Teo Chee Hean . We had the opportunity to engage in an intuitive conversation with MP Teo who praised us in our efforts to take part in the grand opening of the new Language Centre .
Secondary 1 Orientation : This year , the MCS held the Inaugural Secondary 1 orientation . The objective of this activity is to give the new members of MCS a proper initiation and heartfelt welcome . The orientation was in the theme of an ‘ Amazing race ’ where the secondary 1s had fun whilst learning new things about the Malay culture . This never before held activity managed to foster bonds within MCS and also gave us insight into the Malay culture .
