2013 Singapore ArtScience Prize
Two student groups won the 2013 Singapore ArtScience Prize competition on 31 May with their synthetic biology ideas of producing energy and allergen detection .

The competition was held in conjunction with IDEA 2013 , a design and innovation festival organized by SJI . It also featured a keynote address on Design Thinking by Design Council Singapore Executive Director Mr Jeffrey Ho , and a workshop for educators on ArtScience by facilitors by the ArtScience programme from the United States .
The two-day festival drew more than a hundred students , parents and educators to the event held at SJI . The winning teams , from Unity Secondary School and SJI , emerged from 17 teams that had participated in the sixmonth ArtScience programme leading up to the competition . The judging panel included Mr Jeffrey Ho , Lasalle College of the Arts Vice President Mr Venka Purushothaman , and Executive Director of the ArtScience Labs Ms Carrie Fitzsimmons . The two winning teams had the opportunity to take part in the Global ArtScience Workshop in Paris in June .
Launched in 2012 , the Singapore ArtScience Prize competition is a curricular programme and competition for secondary school students to develop innovative art and design ideas based on concepts at the frontiers of modern science . As collaboration between St Joseph ’ s Institution ( SJI ) and the ArtScience

Labs based in Boston , USA , the programme is part of a global network that aims to bring innovation education to young people . ArtScience is the brainchild of the Founder of ArtScience Labs , Professor David Edwards of Harvard University .
