Vocal Ensemble

Formed in January 2009 , the Vocal Ensemble is SJIʼs first choir in many decades and despite being only four years old , has become fully entrenched as a CCA within the school .

2012 has been an exciting year for the SJI Vocal Ensemble as it was filled with many opportunities for members to showcase our vocal talents . The SJI Vocal Ensemble performed at concerts ranging from the Gathering of Kindred Spirits Concert to our first maiden , full-scale concert . Throughout the course of this exciting and eventful year , we have learnt skills and unforgettable lessons as we pursue greater achievement .
‘ Let All Men Sing ’ Concert The SJI Vocal Ensemble held the concert in conjunction with SJI ’ s 160th anniversary , where we performed a world premiere of ‘ O Nata Lux ’ by John August Pamintuan . This is a piece specially commissioned for the SJI Vocal Ensemble for the concert . We also performed the Singapore premiere of ‘ O Fortuna ’ which was written by Ivo Antognini . The choir practiced hard for the concert and our efforts paid off when it was completely sold out and we received much positive feedback . At the end of the concert , our choir also dedicated a song to our beloved choir member , Christopher Melky Tanujaya who passed away in December 2011 .
Eucharistic Celebrations Faithful to the tradition of the choir , the SJI Vocal Ensemble was present at every mass held in SJI . Additionally , we also served as a choir for the 160th Anniversary Mass held at the chapel in SJI International for the commencement of its new facilities . The mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of Singapore and guests included the President of Singapore , His Excellency Dr Tony Tan .
IDEA 2012 This event was the Singapore premiere of the Harvard Art Science Programme . We had the privilege to perform for the “ thinkers ” of the future generation . This event was the stage of our first casual performance in place of our usual blazer-fitted performances .
Gathering of the Kindred Spirits The Gathering of the Kindred Spirits is held to showcase the talents of past and present SJI students . This was an enriching
experience for our choir members as we were exposed to other forms of performing arts and helped us to appreciate them better .
SJI Fullerton Leadership Lectures The distinguished guest on 24 August was Professor Leo Tan Wee Hin , President and Fellow of the Singapore National Academy of Science . We performed at the opening ceremony of the Leadership Lecture with classical as well as pop songs “ True Colors ” by Cindy Lauper and “ Just The Way You Are ” by Bruno Mars .
Our teachers in charge , Mr Kelvin Tan and Mrs Janet Kwok have dedicated time and effort to develop our voices and our character , making us understand more about responsibility . Our conductor , Mr Toh Ban Sheng also dedicated his time to help us achieve our goals .
The experiences and lessons that we have learnt throughout the course of this one year has been invaluable and will prove to be useful in the future as we continue to strive for progress and success as a choir and as individuals in our future endeavours .
