Squash

Did you know Squash was already offered as a sport in SJI in the 1970s when the school was at Bras Basah ? The players would train at Fort Canning Squash Centre which used to be the headquarters of the British Strategic Command during World War Two . Rental for courts was only 50 cents for two hours and racquets were made of bamboo in those days !

Squash MPPJ / Selengor Inter-team Tournament November 2011 In November 2011 , SJI sent 8 teams , each team comprising 4 members , to participate in the MPPJ / Selangor Inter-Team Tournament . The aim of this tournament was to facilitate competition experience and to play against both Singaporean and Malaysian age-group teams . All teams fared well , with one team clinching the 3rd place in the U17 category . Its members are Gladwin , Jiele , Xuan You and Darryl .
National Inter-school Squash Championship 2012 (‘ C ’ Division ) Both teams did SJI proud by securing their place in the top 4 rankings during the championship .
The ‘ B ’ Division Team achieved victory over St Patrick ’ s with a score of 5-0 and overcame teams from Hwa Chong Institution with 4-1 and Raffles Institution with 3-2 , making it to the top of its group . In the semi-finals , Fairfield Secondary School proved to be a tough opponent . However the players fought hard but lost with a close score of 2-3 . Playing against Raffles Institution in the Bronze Medal match , they triumphed with a score of 3-2 , thus emerging 3rd in the championship .
The ‘ C ’ Division Team players Rio , Torrin , Bryan , Manfred , Jonathan , Vivek and Shaun met with an unfortunate start , conceding to Hwa Chong Institution with a score of 2-3 and to Raffles Institution with a score of 1-4 . Then , when all hope seemed lost , St Patrick ’ s School gave us a line-line with a 3-2 victory
over Hwa Chong Institution . This , combined with Raffles Institution ’ s 4-1 victory over Hwa Chong Institution , gave SJI the opportunity it needed to get back into the top 4 position . The opportunity was seized with a 4-1 victory over St Patrick ’ s . We then experienced difficulty when they went up against powerhouses Fairfield Methodist Secondary and ACS ( I ). Encouraged by the cheering and great support from both squash mates and teachers , the ‘ C ’ Division Team managed a score of 1-4 each . This led the team to earn 4th placing .
Singapore Combined Schools Penang Trip Accolades go to 7 of our team members , Gladwin , Darryl , Jie Le , Xuan You , Russell , Ashley and Kevin who were selected for the National Schools Team 2012 . They participated in the 9th Penang Junior Open , pitting their skills against top players from countries such as Malaysia , South Africa , Hong Kong , India and New Zealand and attained commendable results .
