A new home for the
Emergency Department
When Joseph Brant Hospital opened the
doors to the Michael Lee-Chin & Family
Patient Tower, it not only marked the
beginning of a new building, but also
the beginning of a new era in healthcare
for Burlington. And for many people, a
visit to the hospital often starts with the
Emergency Department.
One of the features of the new patient
tower is a purpose built Emergency
Department (ED), made possible in part
thanks to donors.
DR. JOE CHERIAN, CENTRE, AND ED
STAFF SETTLE IN TO THEIR NEW SPACE.
For Dr. Joe Cherian, Chief of Emergency
Medicine at JBH, the space is a new
beginning for his department.
For Dr. Cherian, the new patient tower
opening was a culmination of years of
work that began with floor plans and
providing feedback to plan and build the
new space based on patient flow.
“Having a quality, efficient Emergency
Department is important for me, and the
hospital,” he said. “Being able to provide
care for patients when they need it and
making them feel safe is something that
we are striving to achieve every day in
this department.”

Within the new space, JBH has been able
to provide a smoother patient journey.
Right from triage, patients are assessed
and divided within the department
based on acuity. The Assessment and
Reassessment Management (ARM) area
allows 80-85 percent of patients to flow
through quickly.
Along with updated technology and
increased space including more private
exam rooms, the new space has
in the department, and the changes are
being noticed.
provided Dr. Cherian and the team an
o pportunity to evaluate and enhance
their processes to create efficiencies and
improve patient care.
Dr. Cherian and the ED team utilize a
PDSA cycle - Plan, Do, Study, Adjust
- that provides opportunities for
continuous improvement within the
department. Changes have already been
made, redesigning patient flow which
has led to a significant culture change
THERE ARE MORE INDIVIDUAL BAYS, WITH DOORS THAT
CLOSE PROVIDING INCREASED PRIVACY FOR OUR PATIENTS.
For the second year in a row, JBH has
been recognized by the Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care for outstanding
performance improvement. Our hospital
has shown the greatest improvement in
the 90th percentile ED Length of Stay
(LOS) for all patients within the Medium-
Volume Community Hospital Group
compared to the previous year.
And although there are always
challenges due to the nature of
emergency medicine, with the increased
space and staffing levels, wait times
continue to decrease.
“Everything our donors do helps us
further improve care,” said Dr. Cherian.
“Better equipment, better space,
increased staffing so that we can
provide the care that the Burlington
community deserves and expects.”
