EDITOR’S NOTES
aving recently just moved house, I was routing
around through seemingly neverending boxes of
‘stuff’ that you seem to forget you’ve got until you
need to move it somewhere. I came across a book
that I read when I was at university, written by journalist and
three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Thomas Friedman.
That book, called ‘The World Is Flat’ was a New York Times best
seller and it explores a theory of how the world has become more
accessible - or ‘flatter’ - thanks to the benefits that can come handin-hand with globalisation.
The book’s theory says that although the world was once seen as
flat, it was proven to be round but is now metaphorically ‘flat’ again,
due to improvements in technology and modern accessibility.
Although it was written slightly before the era of smartphones and
tablets, it still had great foresight.
It struck me that this couldn’t be more relevant this year for John
Henry Group, which is continuing to play a major part in the
telecoms growth, as the major and alternative players continue to
expand their networks at astounding rates.
It’s not just the big industry players that are making aspirational
moves in the market either - our ‘altnet’ clients are continuing to rise
and grow too.
One of them, featured in this issue, is G.Network, which has plans
to bring ultrafast connectivity to London, starting in Mayfair.
Even smartphone apps have made major headlines this year - the
resurgence of Pokemon (love it or hate it) is the headline example.
My colleagues and I were the ‘original’ Pokemon generation that
grew up in the mid 1990s and, as kids, we played clunky Nintendo
Gameboys - today’s youngsters enjoy the sleek, interconnected
smartphones of the 21st Century.
In 2016, with so many more communications channels available,
Friedman would probably agree that the world has never been
flatter, especially with the booming demand for telecoms in the UK.
