replaced on piano and drums by Bill Evans and Jimmy Cobb . Immediately from the Milestones album on , Trane was almost unrecognizable compared with the sides he had cut in 1956 . The 1958 Newport Festival concert in particular highlights his metamorphosis . After being held up in traffic , Miles arrived just in time to take the stage . The pressure was enormous and the footstomping tempo of “ Ah Leu Cha ” was 30 % faster than the 1956 version . Based on the applause as the musicians were introduced , the most eagerly anticipated was Cannonball Adderley , considered the new Charlie Parker ... But it was Coltrane who dominated this short performance , raising a terrifying musical storm . It was at this time that Ira Gitler , in his liner notes to the Soultrane album , coined the expression “ sheets of sound ”, a term that has since been used countless times to describe Trane ’ s style .
This approach is already evident on the sides recorded with Monk ( as early as the studio version of “ Trinkle Tinkle ” in July 1957 ), but also in the often-elliptical instructions given to him by Miles :
I ’ d say : “ Trane , here are some chords , but don ’ t play them like they are all the time , you know ? Start in the middle sometimes and don ’ t forget that you can play them up in thirds . So that means you got eighteen , nineteen different things to play in two bars ”. He would sit there , his eyes wide open , soaking up everything . But Trane was the only player who could play those chords I gave him without them sounding like chords .
Trane seems to echo this remark by Miles in a long interview he gave to Down Beat in 1960 :
