As the weeks , concerts and sessions passed , Trane ’ s painstaking search for new scales and patterns took him further and further , leading future jazz historian Noal Cohen , who was 18 years old when he heard the quintet in April 1956 , to say : “ Trane was Trane – lots of notes , like he was practicing on the gig .” But the same month , Tadd Dameron invited the saxophonist to play on his album Mating Call and dedicated the ballad “ Soultrane ” to him . His volubility , the range of his vocabulary , and the obstinate nature of his quest began to win him followers ; horn player David Amram recalls that in the spring of 1956 at the Café Bohemia , Trane told him that he wanted to take music beyond the limits of the 32-bar structure typically found in jazz standards , and to improvise infinitely on an idea or a simple line , in the manner of Indian musicians , a goal that he would go on to achieve in the 1960s .
But heroin was taking its toll during Trane ’ s time with Miles ’ quintet , and in October 1956 , in the middle of an engagement at the Café Bohemia , the trumpeter temporarily replaced Trane with Sonny Rollins , before taking time off for a European tour . At that point , the saxophonist went back to his mother ’ s house in Philadelphia to try to get clean . On his return , Miles called him back ... only to fire him again , along with Philly Joe Jones , during a new engagement at the Café Bohemia in April 1957 .
This last episode is particularly memorable in that Thelonious Monk , having witnessed Miles hit Trane in the face , allegedly came to his defense . From the somewhat confused chronology that emerges from the various biographies devoted to these three musicians , we can see that during the period between these two incidents , Trane , in a state of great distress , waged a painful battle against drugs without medical help , while making up for the
