SHOULD YOU GO TO COLLEGE
ONLINE?
So you want to go back to school.
Congratulations! The decision to further pursue
your education is a huge one. Once you decide to go
to college, you’ll need to pick the perfect school for
your educational path. Many traditional and nontraditional students alike are now choosing to pursue
an education from the comfort of their own homes.
Online colleges offer many of the same degree programs that brick-and-mortar schools do, but without
the stress of specific class times, fighting for parking,
or worrying about finding a seat. Despite the convenience of an online college, however, pursuing your
degree online can be difficult. So how can you know
if going to college online is right for you?
First off, consider how going to college online
will affect your personal schedule. Do you have long
work hours? Are you constantly tired? Do you have
the time each day that you’ll need to do online readings, discussion group postings, and email responses?
While many classes offer flexibility, others require
that you post in the group on a regular basis. You’ll
need to make sure that your schedule enables you to
work online on a regular basis. Conversely, an online
class often frees up some of your personal time since
it means you won’t spend time looking for a parking spot, running to your class, or worrying about
switching classes quickly.
It’s also important to be honest when you think
about how self-motivated you are. Are you the type
of person who can sit down and do online work on
time? Are you willing to make a study schedule and
stick with it? Are you capable of doing readings on
your own and finding the answers if you have questions? Online classes are typically larger than regular
