Upplands- Brogymnasiet (Kungsängen)
At the upper secondary school Upplands-Brogymnasiet, there are about
950 pupils, whose ages range from 16 to 19, and 110 staff members. It belongs
to the Upplands-Bro
municipality. In fact, Upplands-Brogymnasiet is the
municipality’s only senior secondary school, therefore it welcomes students
from the whole area as well as other nearby municipalities. Upplands-Bro
Municipality is a socio-economically mixed municipality and the majority of
pupils come from the neighbouring municipality of Järfälla, which has also
a very mixed socio-economic nature.
Any student can choose out of 350 schools in the Stockholm area. The
student’s school choice depends on the “prestige” the school has in social
media and opinions in teenager ranking. Thus, the school reputation can be
very subjective. This situation triggers considerable competition amongst
schools and unfortunately prestige does not always go along quality.
Comissioned by the principal municipality, Upplands-Bro has in recent
years received a large number of newly arrived
refugees from countries
involved in warlike conflicts like Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea and Somalia.
Despite their efforts to take advantage of this multicultural richness, the
society sees them as potential dangers and blames them for social
upheavals in some neighbourhoods.
