The primary recommendation made by the FAA is creating and managing a minimum separation distance between an airfield and wildlife attractants . The minimum separation distance extends five miles out from the entire perimeter of the air operations area , i . e ., paved and unpaved areas associated with aircraft movement including runways , taxiway , and aprons . This area was determined “ to protect approach , departure and circling airspace .” The five‐mile minimum separation distance for Seymour Johnson AFB is illustrated in Figure 3‐16 . Wayne County and the City of Goldsboro are located within the separation distance .
The FAA set forth various planning and operational recommendations to be implemented within the minimum separation distance . These recommendations include the management of : waste disposal operations , water management facilities , wetlands , dredge spoil containment areas , agricultural activities , and golf courses , landscaping , and other land‐use considerations .
Seymour Johnson AFB utilizes a BASH Plan to manage air and airfield operations with respect to potential bird and wildlife airstrikes at Seymour Johnson AFB and the DCR . The management tools contained within the installation ’ s BASH Plan are further detailed in Section 4 : Existing Tools as the Plan represents a management tool in use by the Base . Seymour Johnson AFB is very diligent about logging aircraft strike incidences . In the roughly one year period between October 2013 and September 2014 , there were 74 aircraft impacts from wildlife strikes including birds , bats and insects , though the log contains entries for aircraft stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB regardless of the strike location , e . g . a percentage of strikes occurred supporting missions elsewhere and as far away as Nevada . It is also important to note that the majority of these incidences were minor and did not result in aircraft damage , and none resulted in aircraft loss .
