The Navy portion of the site hosts four laser, one strafing, and eleven
multipurpose bombing and laser targets while the Air Force portion of the
range contains a variety of practice targets including a centrally located
nuclear target, one conventional target, six improved targets on gravel pads,
three heated targets for infrared training, two low‐angle strafe pits and an
extensive array for Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT).
The Air Force portion also contains two threat systems, a Smokey Sam and a
Mobile Threat Emitter. The Smokey Sam is a small non‐explosive rocket that
provides aircrew a visible missile launch, with smoke trail, to train against.
The Mobile Threat Emitter, which replicates a SA‐6 missile system, provides a
very realistic threat system to train with. Because the DCR is approved for
use during day and nighttime, Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatible lighting
is available for aircrew use.
The DCR houses several administrative, command and control, and
maintenance facilities. The main tower accommodates administrative offices
and Weapons Impact Scoring System (WISS) control. Two other towers,
located east and west of the main tower are used for score spotting. Next to
the main tower are several maintenance buildings used for equipment
storage and workshop space. An additional facility includes a helicopter pad
near the intersection of Navy Shell Road and Center Road.
Local Communities Working Together
Seymour Johnson AFB contributes to the local communities in ways other
than economics. The Base interacts with the community through actions
both related to and independent of the military. Seymour Johnson AFB is an
integral part of the local community and has developed programs and
partnerships with local organizations. Seymour Johnson AFB engages in
many public outreach efforts establishing itself as a greater part of the local
and regional community:

The Seymour Johnson AFB Wings Over Wayne Air Show and Open
House allows the public to attend a free open house on the Base. The
event provides an opportunity for the public to view aerial
demonstrations along with static displays on the ground. Wings Over
Wayne is typically held every other year.
In 2012, Seymour Johnson AFB Airmen logged approximately 400
volunteer hours over just four months with the Boys & Girls Club of
Wayne County.
Along with other local community volunteers, female Airmen from
Seymour Johnson AFB participated in one of the first ever Habitat for
Humanity Women Build programs.
Each summer personnel from Seymour Johnson AFB work with the
Base Science and Technology Academies Reinforcing Basic Aviation
and Space Exploration (STARBASE) program. The five‐day program
provides groups of local 5th graders with a hands‐on experience built
around a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
curriculum.
The Honorary Commander’s Program, hosted by the Wayne County
Chamber of Commerce, brings community leaders together with
senior leadership from the Base to create solutions that improve
Seymour Johnson AFB and the surrounding communities.
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs
Committee, consisting of over 100 voluntary community members,
helps to protect the viability of Seymour Johnson AFB and improve
community relations.
