Washington County Washington County is located on the northeastern coast of North Carolina , south of the Albemarle Sound River , east of US Highway 17 and north of US Highway 264 . The county is approximately 104 miles northeast of Seymour Johnson AFB and about 40 miles from DCR . The county is bordered to the north by Chowan County , Perquimans County to the northeast , Tyrrell County to the east , Hyde County to the southeast , Beaufort County to the southwest , Martin County to the west , and Bertie County to the northwest . Washington County is home to a variety of scenic waterways , wildlife , forests , and lakes . The area is composed of approximately 424 square miles ; of this area 18 percent , or 76 square miles , is water . Washington County includes numerous bodies of water including East Dismal Swamp , Roanoke and Scuppernong Rivers , and Pungo and Phelps Lakes .

During the colonial period , Plymouth was established as an important river port . Washington County was home to one of the most prosperous plantations in North Carolina , Somerset Place , which encompassed more than 100,000 acres . The plantation operated from 1785 until 1865 . During the Civil War , Plymouth was a strategic port for both the Union and the Confederacy . The Battle of Plymouth took place in Washington County in April 1864 .
The Washington County Arts Council and the Port O ’ Plymouth Roanoke River Museum are the most prevalent cultural attractions in the county . Some events held in Washington include the Civil War Living History Weekend , Riverfest , Indian Heritage Week , and the Somerset Homecoming . The primary industries in Washington County are agriculture and manufacturing . Tobacco , corn , sage , and livestock are agricultural products of the county , whereas several factories produce paper products , plywood and lumber , and clothing .
