east, Washington County to the southeast, Martin County to the southwest,
Halifax County to the west, and Northampton County to the northwest.
Established in 1739, the county covers about 741 square miles. Bertie County
is composed of fertile uplands and lowlands, with some large swamps called
pocosins, leading to the successful establishment of agriculture as a primary
industry in the county, along with timber harvesting. Livestock and the
growing poultry industry are major contributors to Bertie County's agriculture
base.
Bertie County is home to several cultural events and the county’s abundant
rivers and wetlands distinguish the region from surrounding counties. Some
of the festivals held in Bertie include Fun Day in the Park at Windsor, Chicken
on the Cashie, and the Sea and Tee Festival. The Cashie and Roanoke Rivers,
the Albemarle Sound, Conine Island, and the Roanoke River swamps are all
part of Bertie’s natural scenery.
