Bird Hazard from Lagoons at end of Seymour Johnson AFB Runway 26 Lagoons for Goldsboro Waste Water Treatment Plant at end of Seymour Johnson AFB Runway 26 encourage habitats for birds . Bird activity in close proximity to the runway is an aviation safety hazard and increases the potential for bird aircraft strikes .

Compatibility Assessment Wildlife attractants near Runway 26 are a concern for Seymour Johnson in a region that supports large populations of resident , migratory and wintering birds . Bird aircraft strikes can cause significant damage to aircraft and in some cases , may render aircraft completely irreparable , as well as result in injury or loss of life to pilots and citizens . The Neuse River , wetlands and wastewater treatment lagoons are located within the CZ west of Seymour Johnson AFB and a wastewater treatment lagoon is located within APZ I west of the base . These natural features and uses are situated within a primary migration route for several avian species and contribute to the BASH risk at Seymour Johnson AFB . Although the river and wetlands are natural water features , the treatment plant is a man‐made addition which encourages bird and wildlife activities that can prove hazardous to aircraft operations . The treatment plant includes several settling tanks which serve as attractants to birds and other types of wildlife , these elements increase the risk for potential aircraft strikes near the runway .
According to Seymour Johnson AFB bird strike statistics , between 2012 and 2014 there were 193 bird / wildlife strikes which incurred a reported $ 566,964.00 in aircraft damages . A breakdown of the incidents by year is provided below . Though not included in the breakdown below , there were 10 bird strikes in 2015 from a variety of birds including pigeons and doves .
Currently , Seymour Johnson protects the runwa the improved areas of the installation . They hav Zone as part of their BASH Plan , which identifies congregations of birds will not be tolerated . The the area defined by this zone and the signage po in communicating hazardous conditions .
Multiple government agencies , including the Fed ( FAA ), the US Air Force , US Army Corp of Engine Protection Agency , the US Fish and Wildlife Serv of Agriculture established a Memorandum of Ag acknowledge their responsibilities to protecting hazards . One of the recommendations of this M establish a five statute mile distance between th airport ’ s AOA and hazardous wildlife attractants cross the approach , departure or circling airspac practices have the potential to serve as attractan been identified as uses that should be discourag mile restricted area :
• Waste disposal operations including landf
• Water management facilities including de treatment facilities , and artificial marshes
