The JLUS Study Area is rich in scenic views and tourist attractions including the Outer Banks – a 200‐mile stretch of narrow peninsulas and barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and a small portion of Virginia . This area covers most of the North Carolina coastline , separating the Currituck Sound , Albemarle Sound , and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean . There are many other areas within the JLUS Study Area such as NWRs , national and state parks , heritage sites , and water bodies which currently serve as tourism draws and destinations or can be enhanced to achieve economic development goals .
There is a concern that noise generated from m diminish the tourist value and potential econom areas , though the DOD flight instructions has sp known tourist areas such as the Outer Banks , be boat docks such as at Phelps Lake .
