5.13 Land / Air / Sea Spaces ( LAS )
The military manages or uses land and air space to accomplish testing , training , and operational missions . These resources must be available and of a sufficient size , cohesiveness , and quality to accommodate effective training and testing . Military and civilian air and sea operations can compete for limited air and sea space , especially when the usage areas are in close proximity to each other . Use of this shared resource can impact future growth in operations for all users .
ISSUE LAS‐1
Potential for Increased use of Military Training Routes Concern that increased use of Military Training Routes could exacerbate impacts on areas of overflight in northeast North Carolina .
Compatibility Assessment Areas of overflight in northeast North Carolina already experience a number of impacts from the use of MTRs in the region . There is a possibility that the use of these Military Training Routes could increase as the Seymour Johnson AFB mission grows and changes . Currently , the 4th Fighter Wing ( FW ) manages 15 MTRs , which provide direct mission support . About 92 percent of the MTR route segments provide low altitude training with a floor altitude of 500 feet AGL or lower . The MTRs traverse private property outside of Seymour Johnson AFB , the DCR , and areas between . The altitudes of MTRs range from surface to 10,000 feet AGL with route widths up to 10 nautical miles ( NM ).
Within the JLUS Study Area , there are eight MTRs managed by Seymour Johnson AFB . Of these MTRs , five have continuous hours of operation .
However , the use of the MTRs needs to be sched Johnson AFB . Normally , a minimum of two hour ensure civilian and other military users are notifi MTR .
The number of training flight operations from Se currently capped due to the aircraft maintenanc DCR is currently capped due to the number of co additional missions with additional aircraft and m Seymour Johnson AFB could increase the tempo Base and subsequent use of MTRs managed by S MTRs and DCR both have additional capacity and branches of the Armed Forces provided they sch additional seven MTRs within the Study Area are Navy and Marine Corps but may also be used by Forces . Increases in utilization of these MTRs ca overflight within the JLUS Study Area resulting in overflight , though the scheduling and control of authority of Seymour Johnson AFB .
An increased use of these MTRs and additional t noise profiles from those currently using the MT traffic and associated noise from overflight . Lon annoyance from aircraft noise is typically the gre altitude , subsonic overflight of residential popula sensitive land uses such as schools , hospitals , an Understanding triggers and thresholds for public process for communicating future operational ch essential to successful public relations and enha and advocacy for the military mission at Seymou
