that improve Seymour Johnson AFB and the surrounding communities. The
Wayne County Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee,
consisting of over 100 voluntary community members, also helps to protect
the viability of Seymour Johnson AFB and improve community relations
through advocacy and various support measures. Seymour Johnson AFB
partners with the City of Goldsboro to host monthly public tours that provide
the community with an up‐close look at the aircraft assigned to the base.
Seymour Johnson AFB is well integrated into the communities surrounding
the Base; however the awareness and outreach to outlying areas including
communities around the DCR is not included in these outreach integration
efforts. There are Military Training Routes, Restricted Airspace, and Military
Operating Areas that traverse these eastern NC counties. While the Air Force
does not fly below an altitude of 500 feet, these areas can be impacted by
noise from military operations and overflight. There is a need for better
communication among these counties impacted by DCR operations.
Moreover, the events are ceremonial in nature and do not provide a good
description of the training activities that are performed at Seymour Johnson
AFB and the DCR. This leaves people unclear about all the training that is
conducted by Seymour Johnson AFB at the DCR.
There is also an Instagram account for the installation,
www.instagram.com/sjafb/ with approximately 1,600 followers. Seymour
Johnson AFB mostly utilizes this online presence for posting internal
information directed at personnel that work at the installation and posts are
typically not directed to the general public. There are no official social media
sites maintained separately for the DCR.
Findings
The installation also maintains a Twitter account at www.twitter.com/sjafb
with approximately 500 followers. The Twitter account posts messages
similar to the Facebook page.

While Seymour Johnson AFB has become an integral part of the local
community and has developed programs and partnerships with local
organizations in the City of Goldsboro and Wayne County area, there
has been little outreach conducted in the area surrounding the DCR.
Social media does not include activities that occur at the DCR.

Engagement with Northeast North Carolina Counties
Need for Seymour Johnson AFB / Dare County Range
engagement with northeast North Carolina counties,
cities and towns to improve perception that the military
acknowledges the impacts experienced in these areas
from overflight and to build regional support for
Seymour Johnson AFB / Dare County Range.
Compatibility Assessment
Seymour Johnson AFB notifies the public of events that may have an impact
on the surrounding jurisdictions and utilizes multiple news outlets to alert

discussed, Seymour Johnson AFB is very active in conducting community and
educational outreach in the City of Goldsboro and Wayne County area.
