Policy LUC #12 and S‐1, telecommunication towers have a maximum height of up to 200
feet. Wind energy systems have a permitted maximum height of 600 feet,
additionally, lighting standards for the wind energy systems must comply
with FAA regulations and standards. The potential heights of towers and
wind energy systems within these areas could interfere with aircraft
operations occurring in special use airspace.
Proposals to expand the area of the existing bombing ranges
on the Dare County Mainland should be reviewed on a case ‐
by ‐ case basis with support or opposition offered depending
on the terms of the proposal and its potential impacts on the
local community. Dark Sky
Dare County does not employ a dark sky ordinance to control light pollution
and prevent glare, light trespass, and skyglow. However, due to the rural
nature of the county, light pollution is not a significant issue that needs to be
currently addressed.

Zoning Code
Zoning ordinances have been amended through 2014. The zoning ordinance
divides the land within the county into 49 districts, and provides
development regulations for these districts. Included in the Dare County’s
zoning code is a stand‐alone Airport Overlay District, regulate the use of
property, in the vicinity of the Dare County Regional Airport.

Subdivision Ordinance
The purpose of Dare County’s Subdivision Ordinance, adopted in 1982, is to
establish standards for all subdivision development within the county. A
