Environmental Restoration Program
ensuring lands are available for sustained use. The INRMP provides guidance
for the conservation and rehabilitation of natural resources at DCR, the
sustainable use of those resources, and potential public access for
recreational use. Natural resource utilization must be sustainable, in
accordance with federal and state laws and regulations, and optimally
integrated with existing plans and mission requirements. The DCR INRMP
was recently updated along with the Seymour Johnson AFB INRMP.
The Environmental Restoration Program (ERP) for Seymour Johnson AFB was
initiated in 1983. The purpose of the IRP was to help establish cleanup
standards for the installation and its related areas. Cleanup standards
included regulations pertaining to the handling of numerous resources.
Objectives stated within the IRP include:
protect human health and the environment
comply with existing statutes and regulations
identify all potential source areas
complete Remedial Investigations (RIs) as soon as practicable for each
IRP site
initiate removal actions where necessary to control, eliminate, or
reduce risks to manageable levels
Characterize risks associated with releases of hazardous substances,
pollutants, contaminants, or hazardous wastes

Water Management Plan
The Final Water Management Plan for the Dare County Range and Alligator
River National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was completed in September 2013. The
purpose of the water management plan is to facilitate better, controlled
drainage and water retention within the area. The plan also aims to maximize
fire prevention, improve firefighting readiness and restore the water system
to more closely resemble historic drainage conditions to benefit habitat
preservation for local wildlife. The plan contains a description of the project
area, the approach of the plan, existing conditions, an assessment, and
recommendations.
